Best Dogs For Children

Dogs That Are Good With Children

This article will show you what are the best dogs for children. It is true that all dogs are cute and loveable when they are puppies. Not all dogs are suitable for youngsters though. The Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Samoyed, and Husky are all great dogs in their own way, but they are not to be preferred over others with proven records around children. If you want your son or daughter to have a long and happy relationship with a wonderful, child friendly dog, consider one of the following breeds.

The Beagle, Basset Hound, Bulldog, Coonhound, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, English Setter, Old English Sheepdog, and Boxer are all great breeds to have. This list is not exhaustive but it is a place to start. Most experts would argue that the above mentioned breeds have a good track record around children and are not too difficult to train. Speaking of training, it is wise to choose a pup from the middle of the “pecking order”. When observing the litter you will always see a range of personality types.

When pups are about six weeks old, they begin to find their places in this “pecking order” around feeding time. When watching them playing and eating you will notice the more aggressive “bull” pushing the others aside and also the “wallflower” sitting timidly in the corner. Somewhere in between is the pup for you. The extremes are very hard to train but the one in the middle of the “pecking order” is the one for you. Observing the whole litter of pups for an entire afternoon will make your choice even easier. Over a couple of hours you will be able to decide which pup responds to your family, listens to your voice, and is eager to play with you. You will just know which is the right one for you and your home.

The advantage of choosing a purebred dog is that you will know ahead of time what to expect. You will know how heavy it will get and how large it will become. Purebreds cost a lot of money and came with papers, but in the end, a mutt or mixed breed can be trained just as fast and successfully as the more expensive animal. In selecting a dog for your children, health is important too. Take the pet to the vet as soon as you can.

Remember, dogs that are good with children will keep the whole family happy. The pup will receive a complete checkup and get the necessary shots to keep everyone healthy. When picking your pet from the litter, make sure its teeth are white and straight. Check his skin to be sure it is soft and make sure his belly button is not protruding. Also, a healthy pup will not have runny eyes or nose. Once you have chosen the pet for your home and have seen to his health, you can begin to plan his training. That training should take place between the dog’s 7th and 16th week. To start training your puppy, become a free member below and receive tips on just how to train your dog.
